William Mayo, medical practitioner, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in orthopedics.
With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Mayo was a medical practitioner specializing in orthopedic surgery, arthroscopy, and arthroscopic surgery from 1964 to 1996. In addition to his primary role, he was a member of the staff at William Beaumont Hospital. Dr. Mayo became involved in the medical profession because his mother was a nurse who always drew pleasure from helping people. Dr. Mayo was influenced by his mother’s approach to work, and also enjoyed science and education. Dr. Mayo has always wanted to become a doctor.
Dr. Mayo began his career as a student at the University of Western Ontario, earning a Doctor of Medicine, with honors, in 1958. He then joined Latter Day Saints Hospital for a residency until 1960, also holding residencies with Primary Children’s Hospital from 1960 to 1961 and Henry Ford Hospital from 1961 to 1964. Dr. Mayo is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. The highlights of Dr. Mayo’s career that stand out the most are the proud moments in which he learned from others. Dr. Mayo first spent time in Manchester, learning the techniques from John Charnley, a pioneer of joint replacements. Later on, arthroscopic surgery was introduced as a new technique in Dr. Mayo’s field. He became interested in the new, cutting-edge practice, and Robert Metcaf, a pioneer in surgical methodology, motivated him to pursue it seriously.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Mayo has been an active leader in his community. The former president of Sportopaedics, he is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Arthroscopy association of North America, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the International Arthroscopy Association. He is the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America.
