Navin C. Shah, MD, Urologist and Educator at MidAtlantic Urology Associates, LCC has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in urology, medical education, and international representation for doctors.
Highly educated and passionate about health care, Dr. Shah has dedicated his career to facilitating changes in medical education and health care. He attended B.J. Medical College in Pune, India, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1960 and a Master of Surgery in 1964. He worked as a resident and later as an assistant professor of surgery at his alma mater and during this time, Dr. Shah wrote a paper that would change the course of his life. The paper focused on urology, specifically the prostate and hernia, and was published in the Archives of Surgery. Though he had planned to go to England for a fellowship in surgery, the paper he wrote drew the attention of the Washington Hospital Center in Ohio. The institution paid for Dr. Shah’s airfare and offered him a job. Dr. Shah seized the opportunity and immigrated to the United States in 1971, remaining in the country since then.
Dr. Shah has accomplished extraordinary feats such as founding the Association of Indian Doctors as well as fighting for equal rights for International Medical Graduates (IMGs). In the 1980s, Dr. Shah went to the American Medical Association and informed them of the discrimination against international doctors. He then went to Congress, testified in the House and the Senate and succeeded in his efforts. In 1990, former President George H.W. Bush signed the bill that ensured that IMGs be treated as equal to United States Medical Graduates. Dr. Shah wrote the book “Fight for Equality” based on his work and hopes that the book will be made into a documentary.
Currently, Dr. Shah is the medical education director at MidAtlantic Urology Associates, his private practice in Greenbelt, MD. He has been the president of the medical staff and the chairman of the department surgery, both at Doctors Community Hospital, and the chief of urology as well as the chairman of the department of surgery at Leland Memorial Hospital. Dr. Shah is a trustee of the Maryland State Medical Society, and is a member of the American College Surgeons and the American College International Physicians, among other organizations. He has received the Distinguished Physician Leadership Award from the American Association of Physicians of American Origin. In further recognition of his success, Dr. Shah has been presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
