Mentored by her paternal grandfather, Dr. Faiz Nassar, her parents and a pathology professor named Cynthia Cohen, Dr. Nassar was motivated to become a doctor due to her desire to help other people in need. A native of Khartoum, Sudan, she received a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Khartoum in 1993. Subsequent to immigrating to the United States in 1995, she soon thereafter received a Master of Business Administration degree, Master of Public Health degree, and Doctor of Medicine degree. Commencing her career in medicine, she subsequently became an associate professor of pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, a position she has held since 2002. During her tenure, she also served as chair of pathology and laboratory medicine.

A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, Dr. Nassar is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists, as well as a member of the American Society of Cytopathology and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Among the notable highlights of her career, she cites being tenured as a professor to be a crowning achievement. As a minority woman from a different country, she was unsure as to how she would be received in the United States. In addition, with the knowledge that pathology is a male-dominated field, she persevered against the stigma and eventually accomplished all that she set her mind to.

As a testament to her success, Dr. Nassar was highlighted in the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who in America. Married with two children, she enjoys traveling, reading, listening to music and playing volleyball in her spare time.
