Donald Lee Jungkind, Ph.D., Retired Director at the Clinical Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Diseases Laboratory at Jefferson Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in microbiology and higher education.
A diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology, Dr. Jungkind teaches step-one courses on a part-time basis with Becker Corporation Medical Education, a role he has fulfilled since 2016. Prior to this position, he was a professor and chair of the department of microbiology at Saint George’s School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, from 2013 to 2015, having previously served as a professor and director of the Clinical Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Infectious Diseases Laboratory at Jefferson Hospital between 1973 and 2013. During his time spent in the laboratory, Dr. Jungkind established the diagnostic virology laboratory and was active in research and product development to automate traditional diagnostic testing methods for infectious diseases.
Dr. Jungkind holds a Bachelor of Science from Lamar State University, Master of Science from the University of Houston, and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. During his tenure, he contributed to more than 75 scientific publications, including the first scientific papers validating the world’s first FDA approved PCR test kits and instruments, which are used to detect human infections and set new standards for speed and accuracy.
An elected fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, Dr. Jungkind also served the organization as its former president of the Pennsylvania branch and sat on its executive board of directors of its eastern Pennsylvania branch between 1977 and 2012. Highlighted in the fourth edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and the seventh edition of Who’s Who in American Education, Dr. Jungkind intends to work with school-aged children in the future, teaching them the fundamentals of the STEM fields.
