Kimberly Rae Carlson, DVM, Veterinarian at North Peninsula Veterinary Surgical Group, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Carlson was inspired to enter her profession due to her love for science, surgery and animals. Believing the most rewarding aspect of her job is the relationship she fosters with her clients and their pets, she has cultivated a deep appreciation for her profession, which requires a substantial amount of strength and compassion. Prominent in her industry for working directly with clients on behalf of the wellness of their pets, she is often told that she makes clients feel comfortable in her office due to her innate understanding of human emotion and respect for their decisions. Notably, she is one of the top ten providers of stem cell therapy to animals in the country, and she is the only surgeon in the Bay Area who will guarantee her service after-hours if a pet requires surgery in the middle of the night.

Dr. Carlson currently works within North Peninsula Veterinary Surgical Group and has previously been a veterinarian with Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in San Leandro, CA. Prior to this appointment, she served as a surgeon with Veterinary Surgical Centers Delta in Berkeley, CA, from 2006 to 2001. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001, having subsequently completed a surgical residency at the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine from 2003 to 2006.

In addition to her primary endeavors, Dr. Carlson volunteers at a local children’s school and was the former president of the Alameda County Veterinary Association for five years, from which she earned an award for her service. In an effort to share her wealth of knowledge within the scientific community, she has authored myriad articles in professional journals throughout her tenure. Notably, she is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Having come from a poor background with significant hardship through her formative years, Dr. Carlson wholeheartedly believes in the power of having a diligent work ethic. She often tells younger clients and students that with enough will power and perseverance, they can attain their goals despite their upbringing. Attributing her success to her many mentors throughout her undergraduate and medical school years, she also credits her parents for instilling in her a sense of persistence in the face of adversity from a young age. She was also heavily influenced by Dr. Robert Harmon, who mentored her on stem cell research, Gail Scherba, a zoology professor at the University of Illinois, and David Salvsky, the dean of mathematics of science at Loyola University.

Married with two children, Dr. Carlson has been highlighted in the 64th edition of Who’s Who in America for her significant contributions to the veterinary profession. Looking toward the future, she intends to continue helping clients and their pets toward better wellness and advancing scientific innovations in the field of animal science.
