Heidi M. Koenig, MD, Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Louisville, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in anesthesiology and higher education.
Backed by more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Koenig has been serving as a professor of anesthesiology and academic advisory dean at the University of Louisville since 2010. Previously serving the university as an associate professor from 2004 to 2010, she commenced her academic career as an assistant professor of anesthesiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Michael Reese Hospital from 1993 to 2004.
Highly educated, Dr. Koenig pursued formal education at Wayne State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in 1980. Thereafter, she received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1985. Subsequent to earning her degrees, she completed an internship at the Southwest Michigan Area Health Education Center from 1985 to 1986 and a residency in surgery at the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago from 1986 to 1989. Desiring to further her medical training, she served as a resident in anesthesiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago between 1989 and 1992, thus completing her training as a fellow in neuroanesthesiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1993.
Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Koenig has spent her spare time serving on the board of the Kentucky Society of Anesthesiologists since 2010 and as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Regulation since 2016. Likewise, she is a special interest task force member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. During her tenure, she has further maintained affiliation with numerous organizations in an effort to remain abreast of developments in the field, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care, and the Federation of State Medical Boards, among many others.
Renowned for her research in jet injections, or needle-free drug delivery systems, Dr. Koenig has demonstrated her versatility in the field through her prolific writing, having contributed several articles to professional journals throughout her career. In addition, she was the co-author of a chapter in the book “International Anesthesiology Clinics,” which was published in 1996.
In light of her outstanding contributions to medicine and education, Dr. Koenig was the recipient of an FY94 grant from the Michael Reese Hospital for 1994-1995 and again for 1996-1997. In addition, she has received national grants from the American Heart Association since 1996. Married with two wonderful sons, she has been highlighted in the eighth edition of Who’s Who in American Education and the 20th and 24th editions of Who’s Who of American Women. She enjoys listening to music, gardening and hiking.
