Roy Pitkin, MD, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medicine and higher education.

Delving into the field of medical education out of a desire to teach and serve others, Dr. Pitkin commenced his career as an assistant professor of obstetrics-gynecology at the University of Illinois, serving in this role from 1965 to 1968. Ascending the ranks to associate professor of obstetrics-gynecology at the University of Iowa from 1968 to 1972, he again served the university as professor from 1972 to 1987 and head of the department of obstetrics-gynecology from 1977 to 1987. For the subsequent 10 years of his career, Dr. Pitkin served as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, having also acted as head of the department of obstetrics-gynecology for eight of those years. He attained emeritus status in 1997.

A diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Pitkin holds a Bachelor of Arts, with highest distinction, and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Iowa. He completed an internship at King County Hospital in Seattle, WA, from 1959 to 1960, as well as a residency in obstetrics-gynecology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1960 to 1963. From 1963 to 1965, he additionally served to lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps.

The former president of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, and the Society of Perinatal Obstetricians, Dr. Pitkin has contributed approximately 200 articles to medical journals and garnered multiple accolades, such as the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, the National Institutes of Health Career Award, the Joseph Goldberger Award and the Agnes Higgins Award. He has been a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists since 1985. Dr. Pitkin is grateful for his career and considers his efficiency, attention to detail and his dedication to using all his time and resources to help others to be contributors to his success.
