He fondly remembers receiving support from the esteemed physician Dr. Jules Stein and creating the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the university, serving as the founding director from 1964 to 1994. Dr. Straatsma’s passion to pursue medicine had been inspired by his father, Dr. Clarence Straatsma, who had been an accomplished plastic surgeon. In preparation for his career, he graduated cum laude from Yale University with a Doctor of Medicine and holds certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has undertaken various responsibilities such as lecturing for numerous universities and professional societies, holding membership with organizations such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery as well as serving as a lieutenant for the US Naval Reserve from 1952 to 1954. Renowned for his work, Dr. Straatsma has been lauded with awards such as the coveted William Warren Hoppin Award from the New York Academy Medicine, the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the West.
