These include being recognized among the Best Doctors in Sonoma County in 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2009, he received the Patient Satisfaction Excellence Award from the St. Joseph Health System. Furthermore, he received the Readers’ Choice Award from The Press Democrat.

Dr. Sonander became involved in his profession to help others and make a difference. For a majority of his career, he primarily practiced in obstetrics. Dr. Sonander is known for building relationships and truly caring for his patients. He has served two terms as chief of staff at Memorial Hospital, and has been president of the Sonoma County Medical Association. Dr. Sonander cares for patients both in nursing homes and homes for the disabled. He makes house calls for patients who are unable to go to leave the house. It is this caliber of treatment and service to his patients that sets him apart.

The Hon. Mike Thompson went before the Speaker of the House to honor Dr. Sonander for his leadership, commitment, and determination over a decade to update the Geographic Practice Cost Index (GPCI) system in California and abolish the flawed Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR). He said “Leading by example, Dr. Sonander focuses a significant portion of his practice caring for the disabled, working as a hospitalist at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital while also serving as chief of staff. He has been active in the Sonoma County Medical Association (SCMA) and the California Medical Association for 26 years. He has served on several committees, including a stint as president of the SCMA board of directors in 2003. As a civic role model, philanthropist, medical professional, and political activist, Dr. Sonander’s work has placed health care for all Sonoma County residents in safe hands.”
