In addition, he has been an emergency room physician at the Wapiti Medical Group with Acute Care, Inc., since 2008. Prior to these appointments, he was a professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School from 1986 to 2008, having formerly held his own private practice at Shakopee Medical Center from 1969 to 1986. Alongside his primary endeavors, he was a visiting professor in the Research Center of Preventive Medicine in Moscow, Russia, in 1996 and 1998 and in the geriatric department of leadership at Ain-Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, in 1993.

Dr. Keenan is most proud of his research conducted in beta-gluten, which was found to have cholesterol-lowering effects. A fellow of such organizations as the American Academy of Family Practice, the American Geriatric Society, and the American College of Nutrition, he was the former president of the American Academy of Home Care Physicians from 1987 to 1993 and has been on the advisory committee on home care with the American Medical Association since 1987.

As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Keenan has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Included in the Guide to America’s Top Family Doctors by the Consumers’ Research Council of America in 2007, he was named among the Best Doctors in America from 1998 to 2009 and won the Outstanding Service Award from the American Geriatrics Society in 1995. In addition, he received Recognition of Excellence in the Area of Primary Care Research in Minnesota by the Academy of Family Physicians in 1993 and Recognition of Teaching Excellence in Coronary Care Nursing by St. Francis Hospital in 1971. Dr. Keenan has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the Midwest.
