Judith Karp, Professor Emerita of Oncology and Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in oncology.
While Dr. Karp assumed the title of Professor Emerita in 2013 after more than 40 years of teaching at The Johns Hopkins University, she still remains active in her work of researching, publishing and contributing on boards and committees. For more than four decades, Dr. Karp worked with the goal in mind in discovering and treating patients with oncology-related illnesses, especially adult acute Leukemia. She recently served as the co-editor of “Acute Leukemia: An Illustrated Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment” for Demos Medical in 2017. Dr. Karp has also served as an editorial board member of “Clinical Cancer Research,” “Leukemia Research,” “American Journal of Hematology” and “Contemporary Hematology” among various other publications.
Dr. Karp hadn’t considered a career in medicine until one of her college professors recognized her aptitude for the field. She decided to explore the field and enrolled, but didn’t find any calling in the field until she took a course in hematology. Dr. Karp graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Mills College in 1966 and received an MD from Stanford University in 1971. She interned at Stanford Health Care before completing an assistant residency in medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. From 1973 to 1974, Dr. Karp served as a clinical fellow in oncology, and then as a research fellow in oncology at The Johns Hopkins University.
In addition to working and teaching at The Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Karp has been a program director of the Chemoprevention Branch at the National Cancer Institute and director of their Hematologic Malignancies Program at the University of Maryland. In her career, she has received a number of awards. She has been featured among the Best Doctors in America since 2009. Dr. Karp has also received the Spiral of Life Lifetime Achievement Award from the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, the Merrill Egorin Award for Mentorship, the Director’s Award from the National Institutes of Health, among many other awards.
