Eugene Shively, General Surgeon at Taylor Regional Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in rural-based general surgery.
Inspired by his uncle who was a doctor, as well as his naturally altruistic personality, Dr. Shively entered the medical profession to help others. While Dr. Shively was completing his residency, he encountered Dr. Polk from the University of Louisville. At that time, Dr. Polk was the chairman of heart surgery, who was instrumental in mentoring Dr. Shively in his career. In his career, Dr. Shively has worked as the Chief of Staff at Taylor Regional Hospital, as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and on the University of Surgical Associates. In addition, he has been a Cancer Liaison Physician at Taylor County Hospital, a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Louisville and clinical faculty at Pikeville College, Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Kentucky.
It was evident from an early age that Dr. Shively was destined for great things. He graduated from his high school, Campbellsville High School, as Valedictorian in 1962. He continued his education at the University of Louisville, receiving a Bachelor of Arts with honors in 1966. He followed through with an MD at the institution in 1970. From there, Dr. Shively was a rotating intern at the University of Cincinnati Hospitals and Affiliates and then completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Louisville. From 1976 to 1977, Dr. Shively was the administrative chief resident at the University of Louisville. In his career, he has been ATLS certified and as an ACLS instructor. Furthermore, he was certified as an advanced trauma life support instructor and in general surgery.
In his career, Dr. Shively has been recognized with a number of awards. In 2015, he received a 36-Year Award as Cancer Liaison Physician, a Winner of Historical Poster of the American College of Surgeons and a Compassionate Physician Award from The Doctor’s Ball. He has also received the Samuel D. Gross Award at the University of Louisville, the Physician’s Recognition Award, a Meritorious Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons and Recognition of Service as Cancer Liaison Physician from the Taylor County Hospital. He has maintained professional affiliation with the Southeast Surgical Congress, the Healing Place of Campbellsville, the Kentucky Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons and the Southern Surgical Travel Club among many other organizations.
