As an accomplished surgeon, Dr. Chiu currently serves as chief of hand services with the New York University Medical Center and director of hand surgery services at NYU Langone. He is also director of the New York Nerve Center there, as well as director of the Center of Restorative Surgery at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Chiu passes his skills on as a professor of surgery, plastic and neurosurgery at New York University, and is an adjunct professor of anatomy and cell biology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. He is a Marquis Who’s Who Industry Expert and a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, featured in the pages of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the World, and the 1987 to 1988 volume of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Born in Kwangtung, China, to Bud Yick Chiu and Lai Kwai Chiu, Dr. Chiu attended the University of Missouri and earned a MD from Columbia University in 1973. He wanted to make a direct impact on people by solving problems and having the opportunity to see results. After an internship and residency in general surgery at the Barnes Hospital of St. Louis, Dr. Chiu served a second residency in plastic surgery with Columbia Presbyterian before becoming a fellow of NYU Langone. He has practiced and taught in New York ever since, though he would like to devote more time to writing, art, and musical endeavors in coming years. Dr. Chiu intends to write about surgery, medicine, and philosophy, and was the author of “Introduction to Microsurgery: A Lab Manual” in 1985, as well as an editorial board member of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery- Global Open.
Among numerous accolades, Dr. Chiu is particularly proud of being the second American to ever receive the Hanno Millesi Award from the Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadian Medical Societies in 2010. He has also received a 1997 Gold Medal from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Alumni Association, a 2013 Leadership Award from the Chinese American Medical Society, and a 2013 Sushruta Orator Award from the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India, among other honors. He was named chairman of the board of directors of the World Association for Plastic Surgeons of Chinese Descent in 2017, among other leadership positions and memberships. Dr. Chiu is the proud father of four and grandfather of two with his wife, Lilian Wah-Ying Shen.
