Philip E. Keen, a Retired Medical Examiner, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in forensic pathology.
The first medical examiner for Yavapai County in Arizona, Dr. Keen is proud to be a pioneer in his field. He knew in high school that he wanted to do something meaningful with his life, and his strengths in math and science made the career a perfect fit. Dr. Keen started out as a laboratory director of the Yavapai Regional Medical Center and a medical examiner of the Yavapai County Government, becoming the chief of staff of the Yavapai Regional Medical Center and the deputy medical examiner of Maricopa County. He eventually returned to his position as a medical examiner for the Yavapai County Government, from which he retired in 2009. Throughout his career, Dr. Keen was responsible for forensic pathology and quality control, and for testifying and presenting evidence in court or at the request of a county attorney. He shared his experiences in books like “Overruled,” “Objection Sustained,” and “Objection, He is Still Alive.”
To prepare for his endeavors, Dr. Keen earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1965 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of New Mexico in 1969. A diplomate of the American Board of Pathology, he completed fellowships in forensic pathology at the College of American Pathologists, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the state of Oklahoma. Dr. Keen is a member of prominent organizations such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the American Medical Association, and the Yavapai County Medical Society. Active in his community, Dr. Keen was a lay minister of the Church of Christ, the treasurer of the Organ and Tissue Agency in the state of Arizona, and a member of the board of directors of the Arizona Medical Association and the Arizona Medical Board.
