Robert H. Ossoff, DMD, MD, Otolaryngologist at the Department of Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the health care industry.
With more than 35 years of professional experience in the field, Dr. Ossoff has served as a Guy M. Maness Professor of Laryngology and Voice in the department of otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine since 2008. Specializing in diseases that involve the voice box and swallowing, he has simultaneously acted as otolaryngologist-in-chief and attending surgeon at Vanderbilt University Hospital and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Nashville, TN, since 1986. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Ossoff has worked in a variety of capacities, including as director of the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, associate vice chancellor of health affairs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, chief of staff at Vanderbilt University Hospital, and chair of the department of otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Prior to these appointments, Dr. Ossoff held the roles of associate professor in the department of otolaryngology at Northwestern University Medical School, consultant at Cook County Hospital, attending surgeon at Veteran’s Administration Lakeside Hospital, attending physician at The Children’s Memorial Hospital, and assistant professor in the department of oral medicine at Northwestern University Dental School. He commenced his career as an adjunct attending physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Ossoff has also served as the special assistant to vice chancellor at Vanderbilt Medical Center since 2013, member of the CME Advisory Committee since 2005, and chair of the Vanderbilt Asthma Sinus and Allergy Program Operations Committee since 1997. In addition, he has been the president of the board of directors of the Vanderbilt Asthma Sinus and Allergy Program since 1997, executive medical director of the Vanderbilt Voice Center at Vanderbilt University since 1996, and member of the board of directors of the Vanderbilt Medical Group since 1995. Earlier in his career, he was employed by the Northwestern University School of Dental Hygiene as course director of the clinical histopathological and oral medical conference and course director of medical therapeutics in the early 1980s.
Dr. Ossoff has also participated in a number of civic engagements throughout his career, including as a member of the board of directors of the Nashville Academy of Medicine since 2013, member of the board of directors of the Nashville Opera since 2011, member of the advisory board of the W.O. Smith Nashville School of Music since 1997, and member of the medical advisory board of The Ear Foundation since 1986. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Vanderbilt Employees’ Credit Union, and The Classic Chorale.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Ossoff pursued a formal education, receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Bowdoin College in 1969 and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1973. He continued his education at Tufts University, obtaining a Doctor of Medicine in 1975. Soon thereafter, he completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital between 1975 and 1980. Subsequently, Dr. Ossoff earned a Master of Science in otolaryngology from Northwestern University in 1981. He is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Tennessee and is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology.
Dr. Ossoff’s most notable achievements include his role in the reestablishment of the department of otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 1986, as well as the establishment of the Vanderbilt Voice Center in 1991. A patentee in the field, he also participated in the establishment of an advanced training laryngology fellowship program at Vanderbilt Medical Center in 1992. In addition to his vocational achievements, Dr. Ossoff has also served as a member of several editorial boards for such publications as Recent Advances in ENT, the Journal of Health Care Compliance, the International Journal of Otolaryngology, and the Journal of Voice. Furthermore, he has contributed more than 190 articles to peer-reviewed journals and 60 book chapters in relation to his areas of expertise, and he has been a guest speaker and lecturer in his field.
In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Dr. Ossoff has accrued several accolades throughout his career. An honorary member of the Chicago Laryngological and Otological Society since 1986, he received the American Laryngological Association Award and Presidential Citation from the American Laryngological Association in 2015. He also received a Presidential Citation from the Triological Society in 2006 and 2008, the James Newcomb Award from the American Laryngological Association in 2007, the Boehm Award for CME Excellence from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2007, and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Dedo Voice Center at the University of California at San Francisco in 2004. In addition, Dr. Ossoff has been an honored guest at such institutions as the Association of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery of Quebec, the New England Otolaryngological Society, the otolaryngology section of the 83rd Annual Scientific Assembly of the Southern Medical Association, the First European Carbon Dioxide Laser Surgery Course and Workshop in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the Florida Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Annual Meeting.
A former National Institutes of Health Research Fellow and American Cancer Society Clinical Fellow during his studies at Northwestern University Medical School, Dr. Ossoff has maintained a longstanding membership with the American Laryngological Association and the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics/the Health Care Compliance Association. Alongside being named a Worldwide Humanitarian by Worldwide Branding in 2018, he has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
