With more than 40 years of experience in the medical and academic fields, Dr. Downham is distinguished for the success of his career. Not long after completing a residency in dermatology research at the VA Hospital in Allen Park, MI, Dr. Downham began teaching as an instructor at Wayne State University. From 1974 to 1977, he worked as an attendant at the VA Hospital and at the Herman Kiefer Hospital. Also in the mid-1970s, Dr. Downham was in private practice with the Dermatology Consultants Group at Harper Hospital, the Medical Center of Dermatologists, and involved with Diagnostic Immunofluorescence for Cutaneous Disease at Wayne State University. In the late 1970s, Dr. Downham was the Chief of the Department of Dermatology at Grace Division, a consultant of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and an active staff member at Harper Hospital and Detroit Receiving Hospital. In 1976, Dr. Downham started as a clinical associate professor at Wayne State University. In 1979, he joined Henry Ford Wyandotte as an active staff member and became a staff physician in 1989.
Dr. Downham earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan in 1966, and continued at the institution to receive an MD in 1970. He followed this degree with an internship in internal medicine at Henry Ford Hospital and a residency in dermatology at Wayne State University School. He completed a clinical associate residency at the VA Hospital in Allen Park. Dr. Downham is a diplomate of the National Board of Examiners and the American Board of Dermatology. In addition, he practices with a medical license in the state of Michigan and has a certificate from the American Board of Dermatopathology.
Active in his community, Dr. Downham has maintained affiliation with a variety of organizations. He is a member of with the American Medical Association, the Michigan State Medical Society, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Society of Investigative Dermatology, and the Michigan Dermatological Society. Furthermore, Dr. Downham has served as the chair of the communications committee for the Wayne County Medical Society since 2005. He has been on the internet committee of the Michigan Dermatological Society since 1995 and a member of the National Medical Legal Information, Inc. since 1974. Dr. Downham was a Captain in the Medical Corps of the US Army Reserve at the 323rd General Hospital from 1971 to 1978, and he published several works, including, “Pitch Workers,” “Furosemide-induced Bullous Pemphigoid: Case Report and Review of Literature” and “Abstract 18; Melanoma Related to Long-term Daily Tanning Sessions.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Downham has received a number of awards that highlight his contributions to the field. In 2016, he was recognized as a Top Doctor with the Global Directory of Who’s Who. Wayne State University has acknowledged his work with Certificates of Recognition for Voluntary Teaching. From 2005 to 2009, the Republican National Committee recognized him as Physician of the Year. One of his earliest recognitions was receiving a grant for dermatology research at the VA Hospital in Allen Park in the mid-1970s.
