Carlton D. Dampier, MD, Physician, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatric oncology.
Recognized as a Leading Pediatric Pain Management Specialist, Dr. Dampier recently celebrated 40 years as a health professional. As a physician and educator, he is noted for his focus on pediatric hematology-oncology, as well as for treating children with sickle cell disease. Dr. Dampier holds a Bachelor of Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology and an MD from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Early in his career, he completed a fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology and residency in pediatrics through the Wyler Children’s Hospital and University of Chicago.
Dr. Dampier initially began his career in a laboratory setting, where he was responsible for performing research that would help many people, particularly children. In an effort to have a more direct impact on patients’ lives, he served as a medical director of the Marian Anderson Sickle Cell Anemia Care and Research Center at St. Christopher’s Hospital for 20 years. Since 2000, Dr. Dampier has held a variety of roles with the hospital, including as medical director for the advanced blood conservation program, director of clinical research, director of the sponsored programs office, and medical director of the clinical trial unit. Most recently, Dr. Dampier was recognized as a chair of the International Review Board with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in 2013.
A respected voice in the academic community, Dr. Dampier has published more than 200 abstracts and contributed more than 80 articles to professional journals. His works include “Guidelines for the Management of Acute and Chronic Pain in Sickle Cell Disease,” which was published by the American Pain Society in 1999. Since 2008, Dr. Dampier has served as a professor of pediatrics with Emory University. However, he considers the greatest highlight of his career to be his continued work with his patients, through which he has been able to follow their progress and see them grow up and eventually have productive careers of their own. In addition, Dr. Dampier takes great pride in his participation with the ongoing development of new drugs.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of medicine, Dr. Dampier has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including the 66th edition of Who’s Who in America, which was published in 2011. He was most recently selected to receive a Worldwide Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
