Dr. Cecilia Pursel Williams, Optometrist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.
When Dr. Williams was in high school, a trip to the optometrist changed her life for the better. She already loved talking to people and helping them, so when the doctor suggested she look into optometry as a career, she did. Dr. Williams quickly became hooked, and she hasn’t turned back since. Now, more than 40 years later, she is thriving in her private practice and is thrilled with the way her professional journey played out.
Dr. Williams initially started as a student at Lycoming College from 1966 to 1968, but transferred to the Pennsylvania College of Optometry to obtain a Bachelor of Science in 1970 and an OD in 1972. She immediately put her newfound knowledge to use as a research optometrist in soft lens materials at Gumpelmayer Optik in Vienna, Austria, and as an optometrist at Sterling Optical Co. Contact Lens Center in Washington. She opened her private practice in Virginia in 1980.
To stay connected to her peers and community, Dr. Williams joined prominent organizations like the Optometric Center of the Nation’s Capital, the American Optometric Association, the Virginia Optometric Association, the Northern Virginia Optometric Society, the National Honor Society for Optometry, and Omega Delta. She also became a licensed and/or certified optometrist in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Virginia. As a testament to her success, Dr. Williams received the Clinical Efficiency Award from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, and was a Women’s Auxiliary of Pennsylvania Optometrists Scholar and Pennsylvania State Grantee. Her achievements have been highlighted in five editions of Who’s Who in America.
