Stephen Hoffman, Physician at Sanaria Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in tropical and family medicine.
Dr. Hoffman is considered one of the leading authorities on malaria and is one of the highest cited authors in the world on the subject. He has written to more than 380 scientific publications and has edited two books on malaria vaccine development. With his decades of experience to support him, Dr. Hoffman opened the doors to Sanaria Inc. in 2002, which he also serves as the chief executive and scientific officer. He also remains active at Providence Hospital, where he has served on the attending staff of emergency medicine department since 1985.
Interested in medicine at an early age, Dr. Hoffman first earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. He continued his education at Cornell University, receiving an MD from the Medical College in 1975. Following this degree, Dr. Hoffman became a resident in family medicine at the University of California San Diego Medical Center and earned an additional diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1978. He has served as a commissioned officer with the US Naval Reserve and was promoted from First Lieutenant to Captain during his service between 1980 and 1992.
In addition to his current roles, Dr. Hoffman is a visiting professor at Manidol University in Thailand and the president of the American Committee on Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health. He has previously directed the New York Center for Travel and Tropical Medicine and instructed at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. Dr. Hoffman has also worked for the Naval Medical Research Institute, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the National Naval Medical Center.
