Robert J. Sokol, MD, Obstetrician, Gynecologist, and Educator at Wayne State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Medicine.

Along with his role at the C.S. Mott Center, Dr. Sokol also has an active appointment at the Michigan State College of Human Medicine, with the department of epidemiology and biostatistics. He is the president and chair of the Addiction Medicine Foundation, currently heading numerous projects in public health, research, and the AIM program. Dr. Sokol taught with Wayne State University School of Medicine for many years and was recognized as a distinguished professor of the department of obstetrics and gynecology. He earned the title of distinguished professor emeritus and dean emeritus in 2015, and continues to work primarily on research.

Dr. Sokol is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and has appeared in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in the World, and the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America. He initially earned a BA in philosophy with highest distinction from the University of Rochester in 1963, and went on to a MD, with honors, in 1966. After training with the Barnes Hospital, now the Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Dr. Sokol was named Buswell Fellow in Maternal Fetal Medicine with Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester in 1972. He later became a fellow in maternal-fetal medicine with Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital, now part of the MetroHealth System.

Of his many roles as a physician, Dr. Sokol has worked on everything from alcoholism to cancer, and with luminary groups like the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He remains president of the Detroit Educational Research Board at the Detroit Medical Center, as well as editor-in-chief and life fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Sokol also served to the rank of major with the medical corps of the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1972, and has won over 17 scientific research awards, including a 2015 Outstanding Research Achievement Award from Wayne State University. Dr. Sokol remains affiliated with an incredible amount of medical and scholarly societies, including the Wayne State University of Academy scholars and the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Foundation, now the Foundation for SMFM, where he is a member emeritus.
