Richard Mackessy, Surgeon at Union County Orthopedic Group, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in surgery.
Dr. Mackessy demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of his profession, from talking with patients, to carrying out complex surgeries and to ensuring long-lasting patient wellness. AS the owner of Union County Orthopedic Group, he sets an example in the medical field, especially for upper extremity injuries. In addition to this position, he has been Chief of Orthopedics with Trinitas Regional Medical Center since 2001. He has previously directed pediatric hand service at United Hospitals and worked at Rahway Hospital and Overlook Hospital, both in New Jersey.
Knowing how rewarding a career in the field of medicine could be, Dr. Mackessy was set on his path by first receiving a diploma from the College of the Holy Cross in 1972. He continued to earn an MD at the Rutgers School of Biomedical and Health Sciences in 1978. Following this, he completed a residency in general surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital and a residency in orthopedic surgery at St. Luke’s College. From 1983 to 1984, he served as a fellow in hand microsurgery at Jefferson Medical College. He is a diplomate and a diplomate in surgery of the hand with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Outside of his daily operations as a surgeon and business owner, Dr. Mackessy has instructed Synthes Courses and lectured in hand review courses. He is the recipient of numerous award and accolades for his work. Some of his recent acknowledgments have been the Outstanding Medical Educator Award from the Medical Society of New Jersey, the Distinguished Trustee Award from the United Hospital Fund and the being considered one of the Top 100 Doctors in New Jersey. He has also been recognized by Castle Connolly and as one of the Top Doctors by Inside New Jersey Magazine. Dr. Mackessy has served on a number of boards, including the Elizabeth General Medical Center and the Trinitas Regional Medical Center. He has been involved with the American Medical Association, the Jefferson Alumni Association and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand amidst a variety of other institutions.
