Nicholas A. Soter, MD, Professor of Dermatology at New York University School of Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Healthcare.

Dr. Soter has been a professor of dermatology at NYU since 1983, and was the interim chairman of its Ronald Perelman Department of Dermatology from 2005 to 2006. He is a long-serving, celebrated educator honored with the 2012 Resident Advocate Award of the Year by the New York University Dermatology Residents at the NYU School of Medicine. He has had a long history of teaching excellence, and is a prolific contributor to medical literature, currently sitting on the editorial board of Anais Brasilerios de Dermatologia and the evaluation board of the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology. Dr. Soter is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and appeared in the 65th edition of Who’s Who in America.

Born in Niagara Falls, New York, Dr. Soter attended Texas Christian University to earn a BA in 1961, and matriculated toward a MD with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1965. He was an intern with Boston City Hospital and a resident in dermatology with Baylor College, as well as an assistant resident in dermatology with the Massachusetts General Hospital and a teaching fellow in dermatology with Harvard Medical School. In 1969, he joined the U.S. Army and served to the rank of captain in the Rykyu Islands of Japan, further earning the rank of major at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Returning to medicine, Dr. Soter was a research fellow in immunology with the Harvard Medical School for two years, and taught as an associate professor of dermatology from 1979 to 1983.

Dr. Soter joined NYU as a lecturer of postgraduate medical courses in 1984, and has continued to serve the prestigious institution. He has been the chief of service and head of the Charles C. Harris Skin and Cancer Pavilion as well as an attending physician and head of dermatology at Tisch Hospital for many years. Dr. Soter’s research work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, and he in turn has contributed to numerous medical associations, including the American Dermatological Association, which named him chairman in 2012.
