Ensuring a healthy mind and emotional being is essential in Dr. Ferrell’s line of work. As an associate professor of psychiatry at Dartmouth College, he is tasked with preparing the next generation of mental health professionals with treating patients in productive and helpful manners. He has served in this position since 1981, but has been with the college since 1975, when he started out as an assistant professor. Dr. Ferrell received his own education first at DePauw University, acquiring an AB in 1965. He continued at Indiana University, earning an MD in 1969.

Dr. Ferrell became a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1975. He added to this in 2001, becoming a diplomate of geriatric psychiatric from the board. In 2006, Dr. Ferrell was made a diplomate of behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry with the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. In addition to being active in education, Dr. Ferrell is active in his communities. He was the girls’ basketball coach from 1982 to 2009 for the Hanover Recreation Department. From 1991 to 1997, he served as a board member of Opera North.

As of 2021, Dr. Ferrell is involved with the New Hampshire Healthcare Workers for Climate Action, and is a facilitator and tutor of the History of Medicine Course and the Year 1 on Doctoring course at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. He has taught the year two problem-based learning course at the institution since 2018.

Outside of psychiatry, he has maintained affiliation with a variety of organizations that have aided in development and growth. He is a distinguished life fellow with the American Psychiatric Association and an electrical fellow and councilor of the American Neuropsychiatric Association. He is also connected with Alpha Omega Alpha. He has been named one of the Best Doctors and in his spare time enjoys reading, travel, music and opera singing. Dr. Ferrell recently received a 2017 Lifetime Achievement award.
