Robert G. Atnip, MD, Professor of Surgery and Radiology at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Medicine.
Dr. Atnip provides services for a range of cardiovascular conditions, including carotid artery disease, stroke, complex aortic reconstruction, and noninvasive vascular imaging. He has been named to America’s Top Doctors by Castle-Connolly from 2001 to 2009 and Best Doctors in America from 2005 to 2009, and is the recipient of a 2008 Faculty Professionalism/Humanism in Surgery Award, from the Penn State Hershey Medical Center University Physicians Committee. Dr. Atnip is one of seven doctors at Milton Hershey who specialize in vascular surgery.
Dr. Atnip is an alumnus of the School of Medicine at the prestigious University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned a MD in 1978. He traveled north to a general surgery residency at the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was accepted to a fellowship in vascular surgery in 1985. Since then he has achieved excellence in surgery, receiving a 1992 Thomas Ballentine “Excellence in Surgical Education” Award from the department of surgery at Milton Hershey, as well as a 1997 Teaching Award and a 2008 Faculty Professionalism/Humanism in Surgery Award from the Penn State College of Medicine. He was named 2013 Educator of the Year by Milton Hershey’s department of radiology, and has been recognized as a 2015 and 2013 Distinguished Reviewer of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
Outside of the operating room, Dr. Atnip has supported a number of civic efforts, notably as a director of the board for the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. He is the chairman of the Quality Committee-Preoperative Assessment Process at Milton Hershey. Dr. Atnip is notable for being the president of the board of directors of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society in 2016, and continues to support efforts in the medical community.
