Robert C. Gilkeson, MD, Vice Chairman of Radiology of University Hospitals of Cleveland, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Medicine.
Dr. Gilkeson has held his current position since 2009, and teaches as a professor of radiology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He attributes his success to identifying the importance of future discovery. Dr. Gilkeson has always been a visual learner, and his profession is a visual one. His ability to diagnose from a purely visual standpoint is what gives him an edge in the field. In five years, Dr. Gilkeson will be expanding research and teaching in radiology as well as lung and heart disease. He is currently a joint holder of three patents for diagnostic methods, and was named Teacher of the Year in 2001 and 2017.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Gilkeson initially studied art history at Princeton University, and earned an MD at Case Western Reserve in 1989 while serving as a research assistant at the department of neurosurgery in Massachusetts General Hospital. He served residencies with the University Hospitals of Cleveland and the Duke University Health System, becoming a fellow of thoracic imaging at Duke from 1995 to 1996. He was appointed to the department of radiology at the University Hospitals of Cleveland immediately after, and became section head of thoracic radiology in 1998. Dr. Gilkeson has been licensed in North Carolina and Ohio, and recognized by the American Board of radiology. He is a member of numerous medical groups, notably the American Roentgen Ray Society and the editorial board of the Journal of Thoracic Radiology. Dr. Gilkeson is a frequent reviewer for the American Journal of Radiology, as well as a reviewer and cardiac section editor for RadioGraphics.
Dr. Gilkeson is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, and received numerous awards and visiting professorships over his long career in medicine and academia. Notably, he has served in numerous committees for the University Hospitals of Cleveland, and received the Noether Memorial Commencement Award in Clinical Therapies, the 2000 Marconi Award for Technical Innovation, and has been named to America’s Top Doctors as well as Best Doctors of Cleveland Magazine for five consecutive years. Dr. Gilkeson is also the proud father of William and Katherine. In his free time, he enjoys golf, working out, art, museums, and travel.
