Roland B. Hawkins, Oncologist at Ochsner Health System, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Medicine.
Since 1989, Dr. Hawkins has provided radiation oncology at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, concurrently teaching as a clinical assistant professor of Tulane University School of Medicine. He feels that the happenstance of his training in both science and medicine is the reason he has been so successful as a radiation oncologist. Dr. Hawkins is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Hawkins is a St. Louis native, and earned a BS in Physics from Washington University in the city in 1962. He earned a PhD there in 1967, when he joined the U.S. Army and served until 1969 to the rank of captain. While serving with the Army, Dr. Hawkins became a postdoctoral research fellow with the James Franck Institute of the University of Chicago, and taught from 1971 to 1976 as an assistant professor of biochemistry at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. In 1980, Dr. Hawkins became a medical doctor at Washington University, and served his residency there in radiation oncology.
From 1984 to 1987, Dr. Hawkins joined the pioneering Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology for a second residency. Since then, he has worked to provide radiation oncology throughout the American Southeast. He worked briefly as a primary care physician in St. Louis before accepting his first radiation oncology position with the Florida Hospital Orlando. Dr. Hawkins worked for the Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center for one year before joining his current facility in 1989. As a frequent contributor to medical books and industry journals, Dr. Hawkins has capitalized on his initial decision to pursue science and medicine. He is certified with the American Board of Radiology, and licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana and Missouri.
