Jonathan Patz, MD, MPH, Director of the Global Health Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Medicine.

Dr. Patz is recognized as an international leader in public and environmental health, and is most proud of winning the Homer N. Calver Award in 2015, presented by the American Public Health Association. He was the lead author of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that took home a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize shared with Al Gore. Dr. Patz’s work is at the intersection of health and climate change, the latter of which was not recognized in the ‘90s. He considers bringing climate change to mainstream scientific consensus his greatest professional achievement, and is working on health aspects for populations today without compromising food resources or sustainable public health. As director of the Global Health Institute, he embraces the complexity of global health challenges, and deploys a comprehensive team of scientists and economists to get to the root of problems.

An alumnus of Colorado College, Dr. Patz received an MD from Case Western Reserve University in 1987 and studied with the Bloomberg School of Public Health to receive an MPH from Johns Hopkins University in 1992. He went on to a residency in environmental and occupational medicine there, ultimately serving in a variety of international roles in immunology, molecular microbiology, environmental health, and population health. Notably, he was a task force member of the World Health Organization from 1993 to 1995, and has had a long professional relationship with the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a leader in international public health, Dr. Patz notably served as a panel member of the Decision to Support Climate Change for the National Academy of Sciences from 2006 to 2009, and has been a prolific author and editor for medical and environmental literature. He is also an adjunct of the Bloomberg School and an affiliate scientist of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.

Dr. Patz is the recipient of a 2014 Fulbright Scholar Award, a 2009 H.I. Romnes Faculty Fellowship Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a 2006 Zayed International Prize, a 2005 Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellowship, and an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.  He was selected for inclusion in the 65th edition of Who’s Who in America, and is the proud father of one son, Evan, with his wife Jean Patz. Dr. Patz is an advocate of the health benefits from mitigating climate change and low carbon economy active transportation, which means designing cities for people, not just automobiles. In his spare time, he enjoys non-motor sports like biking, canoeing, kayaking and cross country skiing.
