George Bacon, Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medicine.
Dr. Bacon has held the title of professor emeritus since 1986, after nearly thirty years as a pediatric endocrinologist and professor of pediatrics. He has continued to practice medicine with Michigan Medicine and the University of Michigan. Dr. Bacon’s inspiration comes from his family and from his environment. His father was a dentist, and although Dr. Bacon didn’t want to pursue dentistry, he was ultimately inspired to a path in medicine. Dr. Bacon is proud of being selected to Duke Medical School in 1957 and receiving a Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Service to the U.S. Army in 1961.
Born in New York, New York to Dr. Edgar Bacon and Margaret Priscilla Bacon, Dr. Bacon attended Wesleyan University and earned an MD from Duke University. He trained as an intern with Duke University before serving to the rank of captain with the U.S. Army and a residency in pediatrics with Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. In 1967, Dr. Bacon completed an MS in pharmacology with the University of Michigan, where he became chief of the pediatric endocrinology service with the department of pediatrics in 1970 and professional service coordinator of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital from 1973 to 1983. Dr. Bacon was ultimately presented with the title of professor emeritus in 1986, staying on as pediatric endocrinologist until 2007. The George E. Bacon lecture in Pediatric Endocrinology at University of Michigan, Department of Pediatrics, C.C. Mott Children’s Hospital was named after him for the years of 2016, April 2017 and May 2018.
In addition to his role with the University of Michigan, Dr. Bacon has notably served as a medical director with the Butterworth Hospital and chief of staff pediatrics with the Lubbock General Hospital. He is the author of “A Practical Approach to Pediatric Endocrinology” as well as numerous articles in professional journals. Dr. Bacon is the recipient of a 2002 Pediatrician of the Year Award from the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the eponym of the George E. Bacon Lecture in pediatric endocrinology at the University of Michigan. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, where he has been a prolific leader in the Texas and Michigan chapters. Dr. Bacon has three grown children of his own, Nancy, George, and John, with his wife Grace Elizabeth Graham.
