Alfred T. Culliford, III, Professor of Surgery at NYU School of Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medicine.

Dr. Culliford has worked with the NYU School of Medicine since he was a young resident in 1970, and is now what is colloquially known as a heart surgeon, though his expertise covers everything from cardiovascular surgery to lung embolisms. He has taught as a clinical instructor in surgery at NYU since 1976, and since 1998 has been a full professor of surgery with the prestigious institution. Dr. Culliford has maintained a longstanding vigil over patients of the NYU School of Medicine as the attending surgeon since 1976.

At the start of a stellar career in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, Dr. Culliford studied biology with St. Bonaventure University in New York and earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in 1965. He went on to a doctorate from New York Medical College in 1969, and served an internship with the Surgery Hospital of the University of Cincinnati. While serving his residency in general surgery with NYU In 1972, Dr. Culliford joined the U.S. Army Reserve, and served to the rank of major with the 74th Field Hospital until 1978. He continued to work in NYU School of Medicine, and was named a clinical fellow of the American Cancer Society from 1973 to 1974, followed by a fellowship in thoracic surgery at NYU from 1974 to 1976. That year, he joined the Manhattan Veterans Administration Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital, and NYU School of Medicine as attending surgeon. There are untold numbers of New Yorker lives saved by Dr. Culliford’s scalpel over the years.

In recognition of his many years of surgical prowess, dedication to teaching, and numerous published medical papers, Dr. Culliford was named a certified fellow of the American college of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of the State of New York, the American College of Surgeons, the Association of Academic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the New York Society for Thoracic Surgery, the American Heart Association, Inc., the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, and the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Dr. Culliford is the proud parent of four sons with his wife, Susan. This is now his 48th year in the medical field.
